Matteo Berrettini Indian Wells ATP 2021

Forty on the board for Matteo Berrettini following Vienna victory

Matteo Berrettini displayed his ATP Finals credentials as he claimed his 40th win of the 2021 season at the Austrian ATP 500 event.

The world number seven overcame Alexei Popyrin of Australia 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in a controlled display over just over 90 minutes on court.

As a result of the victory, Berrettini takes his win-loss record on the season to 40-10 (80%).

In 2021, only Daniil Medvedev (82%) and Novak Djokovic (88%) can boast a stronger record. Both claimed Slam titles this season.

Berrettini has had a 40-win season before, coming in 2019 where he ended with a 43-25 win-loss record on the tour.

However, that year he reached the 40-win benchmark while accumulating 19 losses, nearly twice as many as this time around.

In 2021, Berrettini has added two more titles to his three previous career tournament wins in Gstaad in 2018 and Budapest and Stuttgart in 2019.

The Italian also secured career firsts with his maiden Masters 1000 final at the Madrid Masters and his maiden Slam final at Wimbledon. He lost to Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic respectively at each.

At the Slams, Berrettini has also technically only lost to Djokovic in 2021. In Australia, the 25-year-old withdrew just prior to the fourth round due to injury.

At Roland Garros and the US Open Berrettini lost to Djokovic in the quarter-finals. Come Wimbledon, he lost in the final. On all three occasions Djokovic overcame the Italian in four sets.

Moving forward in Vienna, Berrettini will next face Indian Wells finalist Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Should he and Andy Murray both win their next match, the two would play each other for a third time in their careers. The pair share a 1-1 win-loss record.
