Leylah Fernandez Indian Wells 2021

Fans learn when Leylah Fernandez will kick off her 2022 season

Leylah Fernandez has not played since Indian Wells in October, with fans eagerly anticipating when the Canadian star will return to action.

The 19-year-old talent shocked the tennis world along with Emma Raducanu when she and the Brit both produced stunning runs to the US Open final.

After bowing out as runner-up there, Fernandez played Indian Wells before calling an end to her 2021.

Now, fans can mark an end date for her hiatus, with the WTA 500 Adelaide International including the teen sensation on their entry list.

The world number 24 will join the likes of world number one Ashleigh Barty, 2020 Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek and former world number ones Garbine Muguruza and Karolina Pliskova in the field.

Fellow tennis prodigy Coco Gauff will also be in the draw, along with Olympic singles gold medallist Belinda Bencic and Slam champions Petra Kvitova, Sofia Kenin, Victoria Azarenka and Jelena Ostapenko.

Fernandez will be looking to hit the ground running Down Under as she could improve on her best Australian Open result at the 2022 event just by winning a match.

In her previous two appearances in 2020 and 2021, the former as a qualifier, Fernandez did not get past the first round.

Fernandez has only been beyond the first round of a slam twice, at the 2020 French Open and 2021 US Open.

The Canadian will not meet her US Open final rival Emma Raducanu in Adelaide.

The Brit has instead chosen to play the Melbourne Summer Set along with two more former Slam champions.

Fernandez recently updated fans on her pre-season preparations, describing her time training as “amazing.”
