EXCLUSIVE: Sneak preview of the new Wilson SHIFT

Wilson have an in-house development team called W LABS who are responsible for creating new rackets which is why it was exciting to be one of the only people worldwide to be sent a new racket they are launching soon, the Wilson SHIFT

Tennishead will normally receive test versions of most new rackets but this is the first time for years that Wilson LABS have launched anything so completely new and unexpected (since the Clash which came out around 3 years ago). We have a really close relationship with all the tennis racket brands which is why Wilson chose us to be just one of 40 UK based and one of 300 globally to get a first look at this new racket.

We were told to look out for the racket coming via courier so when it arrived we were really intrigued as we knew literally nothing about it, not even the name.

The racket itself features a design scheme that reminds us of when they test prototypes of cars using crash test dummies. It’s that light grey almost like a paint primer. Whether the racket will stay this colour when it’s launched to the public remains to be seen and Wilson have hinted either way.

The racket certainly felt light in the hand and therefore really easy to manoeuvre. The version we received was the 300g version with a 99 sq in head size.

Our ‘inside man’ reckons that the Shift will sit between the Blade and the Clash in Wilson’s tennis racket hierarchy, which makes it targeted at the strong club player or regular tournament player level by our reckoning.

The instructions from the brand were to head straight onto court and try out the Wilson SHIFT, which is exactly what we did. Tim, the owner of Tennishead with one of his regular tennis friends Kris, both gave the racket a good work out and you can follow their feedback in this video…
