The 2026 edition of Roland Garros is just days from getting underway.

Jannik Sinner is the huge favorite to win Roland Garros this year, having won 29 matches in a row and claiming titles in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome.

This is very different to the women’s singles draw, with multiple WTA players contending for the Roland Garros title this year.

Sinner and these WTA players will all be looking to join the Roland Garros winners’ circle, which includes record champion Rafael Nadal.

Nadal won 14 Roland Garros titles in his career, which is more than any player has won at a single major tournament.

The Spaniard won 10 of those titles after 2010, with Nadal winning his last Roland Garros title in 2022.

Nadal’s dominance means that there have only been three other men who have won the Roland Garros singles title since 2010.

Three titles have been won by Novak Djokovic in this time, with his 2016 victory enabling him to complete the Career Grand Slam.

Stan Wawrinka won the Roland Garros title in 2015, with Carlos Alcaraz the most recent men’s singles champion in Paris.

Alcaraz won a thrilling final against Sinner at Roland Garros last year, where he saved three championship points to defend his title.

Who will win this year’s French Open?

The second Slam of the year…

There have been a much greater variety of champions in the Roland Garros women’s singles tournament, with Iga Swiatek (4), Serena Williams (3) and Maria Sharapova (2) the only multiple-time champions since 2010.

Swiatek has won the Roland Garros title in four of the past six years, but she was unable to continue her dominance last year.

At the 2026 tournament, Aryna Sabalenka ended Swiatek’s 26-match winning streak at Roland Garros, before Coco Gauff would claim the title.

The other one-time champions at Roland Garros since 2010 include Barbora Krejcikova, Ash Barty, Simona Halep, Jelena Ostapenko, Garbine Muguruza, Li Na and Francesca Schiavone.

How many former champions are playing Roland Garros this year?

Despite the variety of different players who have won Roland Garros since 2010, only a select few of them are actually returning to this year’s tournament.

Retirement is the reason for many of these absences, with Nadal, Williams, Sharapova, Barty, Halep, Muguruza, Li and Schiavone all no longer active tennis players.

Roland Garros this year will also be without two-time defending champion Alcaraz, who suffered a wrist injury that has also forced him to pull out of Wimbledon.

As a result, only two former men’s singles champions at Roland Garros are returning to the tournament this year in Djokovic and Wawrinka.

Wawrinka will be playing his final Roland Garros this year, as he is retiring at the end of the season, while there is currently much uncertainty over Djokovic’s future.

Although Alcaraz will not be returning to Paris this year, women’s defending champion Gauff will be the fourth seed as she looks to retain her Roland Garros title.

Swiatek will be hoping to stop Gauff doing this by winning her fifth Roland Garros title, with her nemesis Ostapenko also in the draw.

Krejcikova is the final former Roland Garros champion returning to Paris, having won only one of her five matches at the tournament since her title victory in 2021.

All of these players will be hoping to recreate their previous successes this year, with the Roland Garros main draw getting underway on Sunday, May 24.
