Emma Raducanu victory prompts ‘goosebumps’ from multiple Slam champion
Emma Raducanu sent the New York crowd into a frenzy with her improbable triumph, eliciting a stunned reaction from this tennis legend.
The 18-year-old sensation overcame fellow young talent Leylah Fernandez to complete her fairytale US Open run with the championship title.
Few knew how to react to the joyous scenes that ensued, including former teen Slam champion Mats Wilander.
“Goosebumps being here hearing the crowd,” Wilander said following the win for Raducanu. “Routing for both players because the crowd couldn’t pick one side or another and it’s unfortunate when you have a loser in a match like this.
“[Raducanu] is way beyond her years a tennis player and mentally, she is not 18 up there.
“I think she is more like 32 and will win way more because of the calmness she showed in the interviews and in her victory speech, I really do.”
The final capped an astounding women’s singles draw which saw two unseeded teenagers, world number 150 and 73, battle it out for their maiden Major.
Just prior to her Slam debut at Wimbledon less than three months ago, Raducanu was the British number 10, ranked at 338 in the world.
She can now call herself a Grand Slam champion, a meteoric rise that nobody could have predicted would happen so immediately.
“I have never heard a crowd in Grand Slam tennis being this loud, this appreciative of the players and the player responding,” Wilander added on the occasion.
“This was an epic of the US Open. It was a great comeback of the US Open, it was just an amazing two weeks.”
