Emma Raducanu secures new rankings milestone

While Emma Raducanu has had mixed fortunes on court since her US Open triumph, the British number one has achieved another career first.

The 18-year-old sensation rocketed up the rankings with her unlikely Slam victory.

Raducanu rose from world number 150 to 23 after the New York Major to become the highest ranked British woman.

Following the latest rankings update, the teen talent is now 20th in the world, breaking the top 20 for the first time in her career.

Admittedly, Raducanu is helped by the fact that since she only debuted on the WTA tour this summer, she has very few ranking points to defend from 2020.

By contrast, Olympic gold medallist Belinda Bencic dropped 325 ranking points this week. As a result, she fell from17th to 23rd in the rankings, pushing Raducanu from 21st to 20th.

Nevertheless, the move is a notable achievement for Raducanu. She still has time to grow her points tally before the end of the season.

The Brit next takes the court at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz as the top seed. The WTA 250 event offers Raducanu the chance to climb as high as world number 14 should she claim the title.

Raducanu began 2021 ranked 345th in the world. Therefore, she could finish the season having climbed 331 ranking spot in the space of 11 months.

The world number 20 will face either Kateryna Kozlova of Ukraine or Chinese player Xinyu Wang in her first match in Austria.

Finally, the teenager has yet another chance to face her idol Simona Halep at the tournament.

The Romanian is the tournament second seed, meaning she and Raducanu would meet in the final should they both get there.

The two women almost faced each other at the Transylvania Open recently. However, Marta Kostyuk defeated Raducanu just before the semi-finals, where Halep lay in wait.
