‘Don’t let it turn your head’ warns Wimbledon icon in advice to Emma Raducanu
Emma Raducanu must be wary of distractions in order to keep on track according to this multiple Slam champion.
Following her meteoric rise in the sport, the US Open champion has been presented with a myriad of commercial opportunities off the court.
Many have urged Raducanu not to let sponsorship deals and the like turn her away from focusing on tennis.
Now, three-time Major champion and former British number one Virginia Wade has joined those calling for Raducanu to proceed with caution.
“Getting all these endorsements can turn these young players’ heads,” Wade said in an interview with the Radio Times.
“You’ve got to remember you got [these deals] because you’re a good tennis player, and not for any other reason.
“So you’d better stay being a good tennis player.”
Raducanu has landed deals with fashion brands Dior and Louis Vuitton as well as luxury jewellery retailer Tiffany & Co.
Despite the caution, Wade still very much believes that Raducanu is equipped to deal with the pressures around her and go very far in the sport.
“She’s very smart, intelligent, well-balanced, serious,” Wade continued.
“She really applies herself. She problem-solves on the court. We don’t need to expect anything spectacular in the next few years.
“Give her a couple of good, steady, learning years.”
While the competitive season is over, Raducanu will take to the court again before the 2022 season.
She will appear at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi.
The the Brit will take on Olympic gold medallist Belinda Bencic in the women’s championship on 16th December.
