‘Don’t f**k up the Australian Open!’ cries Jimmy Connors in support of Novak Djokovic
Eight-time Slam singles champion Jimmy Connors is adamant that, since Novak Djokovic has already had Covid, he should be allowed to play the Australian Open.
Since Thursday 6th January, Djokovic has been detained in a Melbourne hotel after his visa was cancelled on entry to Australia.
His lawyers then secured an injunction that would allow the 20-time major champion to remain in the country until his appeal was heard on Monday 10th January.
In the midst of the uncertainty around whether the world number one will be permitted to remain Down Under and compete at the first Slam of 2022, Connors came out with a strongly-worded statement of support.
“Ok, we all have a choice, Covid, boosters, [Djokovic] had Covid,” Connors tweeted.
“Don’t f**k up the [Australian] Open without the “best player” if he tests “negative” [they] should let him play!
“He won it nine f**king times, come on Australian Open, he has been loyal to your event.
The tweet then ends with the phrase “loyal to him” and the hashtag “fight4him.”
If Djokovic were permitted to play the event, he has been detained for four days without access to gym facilities or the ability to use a practice court.
This leaves the 34-year-old with only about a week to acclimatise and physically prepare for action on court.
OK— we all have a choice — #Covid – #boosters – he had Covid- don’t fuck up the Austrian Open without the “best player” If he test “ negative” — should let him play!! He won it 9 fucking times- come on @AustralianOpen he has been loyal to your event.loyal2him #fight4him
