Borna Coric ‘like Daniil Medvedev, but hits harder’ declares Stefanos Tsitsipas
Borna Coric has been compared to none other than ATP world number one Daniil Medvedev by his Cincinnati final opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas.
After shocking the field to win in Ohio while ranked 152nd in the world, the 25-year-old will be seeded at least 27th for the US Open as he hopes to maintain momentum for the final Slam of the season.
Coric dropped just one set in six matches in Cincinnati, defeating top 20 pros Roberto Bautista Agut and Cameron Norrie and top 10 pros Felix Auger-Aliassime and Stefanos Tsitsipas all in straight sets.
“He plays the same as always, not much has changed,” Tsitsipas said after facing Coric in the final. “He has big hits at the back of the court, he never hits the net. He is a solid player from the back of the court, he returns well.
“The less he misses, the more he makes your life difficult. He’s like a Daniil Medvedev, but hitting the ball a bit harder, adding a bit more topspin to the ball, opening the court.
“Basically his ball has a little bit more weight to it when it comes off the strings.”
Medvedev will lead the US Open field as top seed and defending champion, while Coric plays the event for the first time since the 2020 edition.
In fact, that was the last time Coric faced Tsitsipas before Cincinnati, the Croatian downing the Greek in five sets in the third round after saving multiple match points.
