‘Come on, it’s crazy!’ – John McEnroe calls for Novak Djokovic to be allowed to play the US Open
Novak Djokovic has plenty of support backing him to compete at the US Open, and now he can add four-time champion John McEnroe to that list.
In a recent statement, the US Open confirmed that it does not have a vaccination mandate, but that it will respect the US government position on not allowing unvaccinated non-US citizens into the country.
In response, seven-time Slam champion McEnroe has made clear how ridiculous he feels it is that arguably the best player in the world will not be allowed to play in New York.
“I mean, we have to find a way to get Novak into the US Open,” McEnroe told Tennis 365. “How can he not be there? He has just won Wimbledon, he is a great champion and he should be in the US Open.
“I don’t agree with his decision not to get vaccinated, but I respect it. He is one of the fittest guys in the world and everything he puts into his body, he is watching carefully.”
Of course, Djokovic has already been barred from playing a Slam this season when back in January he was deported from Australia ahead of the Australian Open.
McEnroe continued by mentioning that debacle.
“Now we are saying that because of his choice, he can’t play at the US Open,” the American continued. “I mean, come on. He has already been deported from Australia for the same reason and here we are again.
“I hope someone finds a way to sort this out. It’s crazy that Novak misses the US Open at this stage.”
