Carlos Alcaraz sinks Juan Manuel Cerundolo to sustain momentum into Next Gen semi-finals
While his perfect record at the Next Gen ATP Finals is over, Carlos Alcaraz remains undefeated at the Milan event.
Heading into his match with Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Alcaraz was the only player left in the tournament who was yet to lose a set.
Meanwhile, the Argentine already knew he could not qualify for the semi-finals and was playing purely for pride.
Nevertheless, Alcaraz showed no mercy as he continued his strong form to go 4-0, 4-1 up on his opponent in under 40 minutes.
Cerundolo did then put up more of a fight in the third setting himself up with three set points on the Alcaraz serve.
He took the third to inflict a first lost set for Alcaraz at the tournament. However, the Spaniard was too strong in the end. He dominated a tiebreak in the fourth to win 4-0, 4-1, 2-4, 4-3 (7-3).
“Being able to play a semi-final here is amazing,” Alcaraz said about moving forward in Milan.
“Playing these kinds of matches, at this level. I’m really glad about the level that I’m playing.
“I feel really comfortable here in Milan. I want to end the year winning the tournament.”
Alcaraz has been particularly impressive in clutch moments in Milan. The Spaniard has so far won all four tiebreaks he has played at the Next Gen Finals.
He could face any of Sebastian Korda, Lorenzo Musetti or Sebastian Baez in the semi-finals as any of the three could yet qualify from Group B.
