Serena Williams receives Wimbledon wildcard for 2022 return

Wimbledon have confirmed the news that Serena Williams will play the event later this month by announcing the awarding of a wildcard to the legend.

The 23-time Major champion will play the event for a 21st time in her career after injury ended her 2021 campaign at the tournament in the first round.

Beforehand, Serena will play the women’s doubles at Eastbourne alongside world number four Ons Jabeur.

She said according to the LTA: “I am excited to return to the Rothesay International tournament in England and to be back on the grass.

“It is a surface that has been so good to me throughout my career.

“Eastbourne has a unique charm that you don’t see anywhere else on Tour and I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans again.”

It will be a third career appearance for Serena at Eastbourne after debuting in 1999 and playing again in 2011.

Since she has not played for nearly a year, Serena has dropped all the way to 1208th in the world and will drop off the singles rankings altogether after Wimbledon if she does not play any singles before The Championships.

Earlier on Tuesday, Serena had let the Wimbledon news out to her fans via social media.

She captioned a social media post: “It’s a date [Wimbledon].”

“2022 See you there.

“Let’s go.”
