Serena Williams announces Wimbledon return with social media post

Serena Williams will return to play at Wimbledon come the end of June, at least according to her most recent social media post.

The 23-time Major champion has not been in competitive action since The Championships last year when she suffered an unfortunate injury in her first round match.

But Serena, now 40, seems to be aiming for a 21st career appearance at the All England Club.

She captioned a photo of her tennis shoes on Instagram: “SW and SW19.

“It’s a date.

“2022 See you there.

“Let’s go.”

Serena has won the women’s singles at Wimbledon seven times from 11 final appearances.

Her last final came against Simona Halep in 2019, while her last title was back in 2016, defeating Angelique Kerber that day.

Fans have wondered ever since last summer when, or even if, the American superstar would return to the tour.

Serena targeted Wimbledon for a return back in April in a laid back social media post alongside Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

But this newest announcement will get the tennis world excited at the prospect of seeing her on the grass in 2022.

Having missed the entry list deadline to play the event with a protected ranking, Serena would require a wildcard to play the event.

As a seven-time champion, surely that would be no issue for her.
