‘It’s awesome!’ – Casper Ruud hailed as ‘credit to our game’ by John McEnroe
Casper Ruud has gained major respect from four-time US Open champion John McEnroe as the Norwegian is on the cusp of his first title in New York.
The world number seven began the year without a Slam quarter-final to his name, but has since reached a Masters 1000 final in Miami and two Major finals at Roland Garros and now the US Open.
Not only is he in a second Slam final, but the 23-year-old might even be ranked world number one after the tournament.
“Casper did great, he backed up the French Open, I am impressed and he’s looking awesome,” McEnroe told Eurosport. “He’s got a shot at winning this thing. I can’t believe I am saying this but Casper Ruud might be number one in the world in a couple of days.”
Ruud and Alcaraz are playing not only for their first Major title but also a straight shootout for world number one, as the victor will top the rankings on Monday.
“It’s awesome, he’s humble, he’s not going to light the stadium on fire with his charisma like an Alcaraz or Frances Tiafoe, but he’s a credit to our game,” McEnroe continued. “He’s extremely solid, he works hard, I think spending the last couple of years at the Nadal Academy, seeing how Rafa [Nadal] does things, helped him realise he had to do even more.”
