Felix Auger-Aliassime Cincinnati Open 2022

Felix Auger-Aliassime continues ‘close to perfect week’ by conquering Carlos Alcaraz

Felix Auger-Aliassime has claimed a third win over Carlos Alcaraz in as many meetings, defeating the Spaniard in Basel to add to his brilliant run of form indoors.

Auger-Aliassime defeated the world number one 6-3, 6-2 to book his spot in the ATP 500 final. After back-to-back titles in Florence and Antwerp, the 22-year-old Canadian has now won 12 consecutive matches.

“So far it’s very close to perfect,” Auger-Aliassime said of his week in Basel. “I’ve been serving amazing, not getting broken once yet. There’s still one match to go, but it’s been a fantastic week. I’ve played some great tennis, and again today against the best player in the world.

“It’s an amazing win. So I’m really happy with my level and hopefully I can go all the way.”

In fact, Felix Auger-Aliassime has played inspired tennis all week in Basel. He has faced just one break point all week at the event, that against Alcaraz while serving for the match. In the first round, he beat Marc-Andrea Huesler 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-4 without being broken. He then dismantled Miomir Kecmanovic 6-1, 6-0 before downing Alexander Bublik 6-2, 6-3 to face Alcaraz.

Next up the top 10 star will face either Next Gen talent Holger Rune in a first time meeting or Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut. Auger-Aliassime’s last loss came against Bautista Agut in the first round of Astana, a result he would hope to avenge.

“Both matches would be exciting,” he added of his potential opponents. “In front of a great crowd, on a Sunday. There’s nothing better. That’s what we train for, that’s what we play for and I’ll be ready to go tomorrow.”
