Felix Auger-Aliassime: ‘For sure the best match I’ve ever played’

Felix Auger-Aliassime admitted he played a perfect match to crush Miomir Kecmanovic and reach the quarter-finals of the Swiss Indoors Basel.

The world number nine ousted his Serbian opponent 6-1, 6-0 in only 49 minutes to cruise into the last eight in Switzerland. The victory takes the Canadian to 10 consecutive wins as he chases a third successive title in as many weeks.

“Honestly it’s tough to play better than that from my part,” Auger-Aliassime admitted “For sure the best match I’ve played in my whole life. Not my career, I think since I was a little kid.

“It’s a nice feeling. It was a treat to play this level. To play this way in front of you. So again, thank you. I’m having a lot of fun here and it’s been going well. So hopefully it keeps going this way.”

Felix Auger-Aliassime came into 2022 without a tour title to his name after losing eight finals in a row. He broke the curse in Rotterdam in February before adding titles in Florence and Antwerp this month.

The 22-year-old is in hot pursuit of a spot at the ATP Finals. He currently occupies the final qualifying position with 3,225 points at seventh in the race, leading Taylor Fritz by 315 points. With the American out of Vienna, Auger-Aliassime has an opportunity to widen the gap between them before Paris, though ninth-placed Hubert Hurkacz could close in too.

Next in Basel Auger-Aliassime faces Kazakhstani maverick Alexander Bublik.

“I’m sure we’ll see a little bit of everything tomorrow,” the Canadian said of the world number 38. “He’s always a tough opponent, very tricky, especially indoors. He serves so well.”

The pair are 1-1 in their head-to-head, with Bublik winning their last meeting at the 2020 European Open on the clay of Hamburg.
