ATP star describes Serena Williams as ‘greatest of all time’
A top ATP talent has added his opinion to the many that Serena Williams is the greatest player in the history of tennis.
With 23 Majors, Serena Williams has more singles Slam titles than almost anyone else in the history of the sport.
Only Margaret Court has more with 24, but only 11 of those came in the Open Era when professionals were allowed to compete alongside amateurs at the Slams.
Now, ATP number 38 and fellow American pro Frances Tiafoe has put forward his view that Serena is the greatest player ever.
“She’s a GOAT (Greatest Of All Time),” Tiafoe told l’Equipe, “And for decades!”
“She is so much more than what she has accomplished in tennis. I grew up in a neighbourhood where everyone around, in every corner, knows Serena Williams.
“When I go back and say I play tennis, the first thing I hear is, “Ah! Like the Williams sisters!”
Between them, Serena and Venus Williams have won 30 Slam singles titles, plus 14 more as a doubles pair. They also have an Olympic singles gold medal each and three doubles gold medal also won as a team.
Tiafoe further spoke of when he attended the US Open and would always notice the celebrities in the Williams’ box.
“The other sportspeople respect them enormously,” he said. “When I came to see the US Open matches, I remember the boxes on the courts where they played were overflowing with Hollywood stars.
“I told myself that I wanted to be like them: not only to have a great career in tennis but also to transcend the sport.”
