Anett Kontaveit ‘trying to take it all in’ after reaching WTA Finals title match

Anett Kontaveit will cap her stellar second half of 2021 with a shot at winning the WTA Finals on her debut.

The Estonian took on fellow debutant Maria Sakkari as the pair looked to join Garbine Muguruza in the final in Guadalajara.

Kontaveit struck early to claim the first set 6-1 before Sakkari responded to level the encounter 6-3 in the second.

After a little over two hours on-court, Kontaveit closed out the match to reach her seventh final of the season.

“I still can’t quite believe that I’m even here,” Kontaveit explained in her post-match interview.

“That I’m playing against the best players at such a prestigious tournament. I’m just so proud of myself that I managed to do this and so happy to be competing at this level and really just trying to take it all in.”

Kontaveit now leads the WTA tour in wins in 2021 with 48. A win-loss record of 48-16 gives her a win percentage of 75%.

Moreover, she is now 7-0 in semi-final matches this season, and can win a third consecutive title should she claim the crown at the WTA Finals.

However, she now takes on Muguruza for that chance. The two women were in the same group before the knockout stages, with Muguruza winning there 6-4, 6-4.

Kontaveit is 1-1 against the Spaniard in 2021 and 2-3 over the course of their careers.

Muguruza’s appearance in the final is her best ever WTA finals result, having previously gone as far as the semi-finals in 2015.
