American star takes aim at ATP over ‘conflicts of interest’

The ATP tour has too many structural problems and conflicts of interest according to outspoken American ace Reilly Opelka.

The world number 26 is rarely afraid to share his unfiltered opinion about many topics in tennis and beyond.

In particular it tends to be the structure of the ATP that generates Opelka’s ire, and he has once again taken to Twitter with a series of tweets taking aim at the ATP once more – this time for what he considers to be a weak response to the Peng Shuai situation.

“Throwback to when people got mad at me for complaining about the ATP and its conflicts of interest,” one tweet from the American reads, replying to another on an ATP tournament representative.

That original tweet was in response to one from Jon Wertheim, a senior writer at Sports Illustrated.

“Hearing this again and again, ATP players of all tiers and ages support the WTA [on its stance with China],” his tweet reads.

“[They] are surprised/disenchanted by the invertebrate stance [from the ATP]. It’s largely the tournament board reps preventing a firmer response.

“This is our second conflict of interest,” begins another tweet from Opelka on the issue.

“Not taking shots at Gavin [Forbes] here, just the structure of the ATP.”
