Jo Konta Wimbledon 2019

Jo Konta has “a good draw and as good a chance as anyone” to win Wimbledon, says respected commentator

Jo Konta, Britain’s only remaining player in a singles draw can still win the whole tournament according to this 7 time Grand Slam Champion

Jo Konta can do what no other British women has done since 1977 when Virginia Wade beat Betty Stove to win the Wimbledon Ladies Singles title, at least that’s what Mats Wilander thinks might happen.

Wilander, speaking on Eurosport, said of Jo Konta, British No.1, “Jo Konta is playing with a lot of confidence and I think she is very intimidating when she takes the ball so early. She’s got that big first serve and gets a lot of free points. She is on her way and so far there haven’t been that many women who have impressed me, Konta is one that has.”

However, today Konta has her toughest match yet against many peoples favourite this year, Petra Kvitova, so she’ll need to be at her best to progress to the quarter finals. Konta has beaten Kvitova once on grass before at Eastbourne in 2016 but overall Kvitova holds a winning 3-1 record against the Brit.

Wilander went on to say, ” “I don’t think there’s a clear favourite in the women’s draw because they just keep falling off. Garbine Muguruza, Angie Kerber, we all thought might be contenders. Perhaps Serena Williams now? It’s hard to pick one so you look at Jo Konta and she has as good chance as anyone.”

Today’s matches in the 4th round of the Ladies singles are:

Barty v Riske

Williams v Suarez Navarro

Strycova v Mertens

Konta v Kvitova

Svitolina v Martic

Muchova v Pliskova

Halep v Gauff

Zhang v Yastremska
