Matteo Berrettini withdraws from Vienna to leave ATP Finals hopes hanging by a thread

Matteo Berrettini is close to being mathematically out of the running for the ATP Finals after having to withdraw from Vienna.

The world number 14 began the week 13th in the live ATP race to qualify in Turin with 2,375 points. Felix Auger-Aliassime currently occupies the final qualifying spot at the event with 3,225 points.

With 1000 points up for grabs at the Paris Masters, Berrettini can finish the race with a maximum of 3,375 points. Therefore, the Italian is now left to hope that other players like Auger-Aliassime perform poorly in Vienna and Basel as well as in Paris if he is to be in with a chance.

“Congratulations to my good friend Lorenzo on the title in Napoli,” he captioned an Instagram post, tagging Musetti after losing to him at the Napoli Cup on Sunday. “And thank you to all the fans for the incredible support throughout the week.

“Following multiple assessments from medical experts on my left foot, I have been informed that I will not be able to compete in Vienna. I will do everything I can to try be ready to compete in Paris.

“Thank you as always for all the kind messages.”

Berrettini first qualified for the ATP Finals in 2019 when the event took place in London. He returned to the event last year at the inaugural Turin edition, but had to retire from his first match in tears with an injury.

The 26-year-old was sidelined between March and June before Covid stopped his momentum again ahead of Wimbledon.
