US Open prize money breaks historic $60 million barrier

The US Open will hand out a total of US$60.1 million across all competitions in 2022, including a mammoth US$2.6 million payout for the men’s and women’s singles champions.ย

That champion’s purse is up from the US$2.5 million won by Daniil Medvedev and Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open.

Prize money is up across the board compared to 2021, in all rounds of all events, starting in the singles main draw at US$80,000 for an appearance in the first round, up 6.7% from US$75,000 in 2021.

Doubles champions will win US$688,000 as a team compared to US$660,000 claimed by Rajeev Ram, Joe Salisbury, Sam Stosur and Zhang Shuai last September.

While the overall purse is at an all-time high, the trend towards a more equitable distribution of prize money has continued as champions earn less while players in earlier rounds earn more compared to past events.

For example, in 2019 singles champions Bianca Andreescu and Rafael Nadal went home with an eye-watering US$3,850,000, whereas a first round loser went away with US$58,000.

Before the main draw, the US Open has also touted its increase to qualifying prize money, with the qualifying purse totalling US$6.25 million.

Players who reach the final round of qualifying but fail to reach the main draw will be awarded US$44,000.
