Simona Halep suffers US Open scare as thigh injury forces Cincinnati withdrawal
Simona Halep has had her hard court momentum stunted after having to withdraw ahead of her second round match at the Cincinnati Open.ย
The former world number one was on a seven match winning streak after winning the Canadian Open before she handed Veronika Kudermetova a walkover due to a right thigh injury.
That title in Toronto was Halep’s biggest since the 2020 Italian Open nearly two years ago and catapulted her back into the top 10 for the first time in just over a year.
Moreover, the Romanian’s win over Anastasia Potapova in the first round of Cincinnati took her to 39 victories this season, second only to world number one Iga Swiatek.ย

Halep is not the only unfortunate retiree in the Cincinnati women’s draw, as Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova had to pull out mid-match and ahead of the second round respectively, both with ankle injuries.
Anna Kalinskaya retired while battling Aryna Sabalenka, and Marie Bouzkova handed Alison Riske-Amritraj a walkover into the last 16.
Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina and French Open winner Swiatek are on course to meet in the quarter-finals should each win their next match.
Meanwhile, Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur will face former world number two Petra Kvitova and Emma Raducanu takes on Jessica Pegula after dismantling Victoria Azarenka in the second round.
Kudermetova meets Ajla Tomljanovic in the last 16 next after the Australian defeated third seed Paula Badosa 6-7 (3-7), 6-0, 6-2.
