Emma Raducanu conqueror fells another Slam champ to reach Roland Garros fourth round

World number 47 Aliaksandra Sasnovich has now defeated two US Open champions consecutively as she took out Angelique Kerber after downing Emma Raducanu in the second round of Roland Garros. 

The Belarusian beat 2021 US Open champion Raducanu 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 before today ousting the 2016 winner in New York Kerber 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Today’s result was Sasnovich’s first win over Kerber in three attempts.

Sasnovich lost to Kerber at Wimbledon last year and a little over a week ago in the last 16 in Strasbourg, the German going on to claim the title there.

Now, the 28-year-old is into the fourth round of Roland Garros for the first time in her career, matching her best ever Major run.

That career-best came back in 2018 at Wimbledon, where she reached the fourth round before falling to eventual semi-finalist Jelena Ostapenko.

Kerber was also a significant player at that Slam as she went on to win that event for her third and most recent Major triumph.

Next up, Sasnovich will take on Martina Trevisan of Italy.

Ranked 59th, the fellow 28-year-old is into the fourth round of a Major for a second time after she made it to the quarter-finals of the Covid-postponed Roland Garros 2020.

That year she reached that stage as a qualifier before losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek.

Lucky for her, she and the rest of her half of the draw will avoid Swiatek until the final, whoever makes it to the championship match.

The victor of the first ever meeting between Sasnovich and Trevisan will take on either Leylah Fernandez or Amanda Anisimova as both youngsters won their third rounds in three sets.
