‘I come prepared’ – Paula Badosa eyes French Open success
World number three Paula Badosa has declared that she is fully prepared for the upcoming French Open as she looks to claim her maiden Grand Slam title.
The American-born Spaniard has had a fantastic rise over the last 12 months. In 2021 starting off the year as a ranked 70th in the world, Badosa finished with a season record of 41 wins and 15 losses, with her first career tour level titles coming that season.
Her first was the WTA 250 Serbia Ladies Open in May before winning the coveted Indian Wells event in October of last year. Due to her red hot form, she managed to make the WTA Finals for the first time.
She has managed to remain competitive and maintain her form in 2022 and achieved a career high ranking of second in the world and claimed her third WTA career title in Sydney back in January.
However, her hard-court form has not transferred to clay courts, as the 24-year-old has only reached the semi-finals once in her past four tournaments on the red dirt.
Despite this, Paula Badosa has insisted that she is ready for Roland Garros even though she fears she may of played too much during the clay court swing.
Speaking to Marca, Badosa told reporters, “I would have changed not to play a tournament on this land tour, I won’t say which one. But I come prepared, I have worked very well.
The Spaniard also discussed her nerves and the different challenges faced when playing in the major tournaments.
“I am very prepared physically and tennis-wise. Mentally I would have liked to arrive a little calmer. But it is a Grand Slam, we all have nerves on the surface and it is the one who manages it best.
“Playing as a favorite is never easy, especially for rivals who play with nothing to lose and raise the level more. It’s another challenge that I’m going to have and I’m looking forward to facing it.
“For me it is a very emotional tournament, it means a lot. I won the junior there, it was the first Grand Slam I went to see when I was nine years old. I have many beautiful memories and I would very much like to do it very well.”
