Paula Badosa needs ‘patience’ to become World No.1 says WTA veteran
Former world number six Carla Suarez has argued that Paula Badosa will become the new world number one only if she is able to be “patient.”
The American-born Spaniard has had a fantastic rise over the last 12 months.
In 2021 starting off the year as a ranked 70th in the world, Paula Badosa finished with a season record of 41 wins and 15 losses, with her first career tour level titles coming that season.
Her first was the WTA 250 Serbia Ladies Open in May before winning the coveted Indian Wells event in October of last year.
Due to her red hot form, she managed to make the WTA Finals for the first time.
She has managed to remain competitive and maintain her form in 2022 and achieved a career high ranking of second in the world and claimed her third WTA career title in Sydney back in January.
Discussing the state of women’s tennis in Spain, the two-time tour titlist and former WTA player Carla Suarez has stated that despite Iga Swiatek’s dominance Paula Badosa will eventually reach the world number one spot.
“I see it in a very good moment. Last year, Paula Badosa took a giant step and, in addition, this year, she is consolidating it. With patience and without hurry, I see Paula as number one. She is close. She only has Iga Swiatek ahead. He is doing things very well.”
She then went on to label the current level of tennis in Spain as a “joy” as she made reference to lots of other Spanish WTA talents.
“And of Garbiñe Muguruza we already know what she is capable of without any injuries. Behind her, there are people like Sara Sorribes or Nuria Párrizas and young tennis players with a lot of desire. Spanish women’s tennis is in a moment of being able to give joy”
