Emma Raducanu confirmed for debut Central American swing
Emma Raducanu has confirmed her participation at two Mexican WTA 250 events, the Abierto Zapopan and the Monterrey Open, and will be joined by some prestigious company.
19-year-old US Open champion Raducanu has been absent from the tour since the Australian Open last month as she decided to focus on training as opposed to competitive fixtures to build up her fitness.
This concerned Germany’s greatest ever male player Boris Becker who felt she needed to “throw herself into the deep end of the WTA Tour.” The Abierto Zapopan will only be Raducanu’s tenth tour event.
After dispatching 2017 US Open winner Sloane Stephens in the first round, Raducanu battled against blistering in her second round match against World number 72 Danka Kovinic.
As a result of her ‘Happy Slam’ performances, the British starlet has risen up the WTA rankings to reach a career-high ranking of 12th in the World. This will make her the top seeded player in Guadalajara.
Raducanu will enjoy a year of firsts as this her first full season on the WTA tour. After a first Australian Open, Raducanu has now been confirmed to compete in a debut Central American swing at the Abierto Zapopan in Guadalajara and the Abierto Seguros in Monterrey.
Competing alongside Raducanu at both tournaments are World number 56 Sloane Stephens, Australian Open semi-finalist Madison Keys and defending Guadalajara champion Sara Sorribes Tormo.
The Guadalajara event will take place between February 21st and February 27th, whilst the Monterrey Open will run from February 28th to March 6th.
Four former Monterrey winners will join in the second week of the Mexican swing, with record four-time champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, defending champion Leylah Fernandez, 2020 victor Elina Svitolina and 2016 winner and fellow Brit Heather Watson.
Raducanu had a message for her fans in the form of a Twitter video. She said “hey everyone, I just wanted to say I am looking forward to coming out there and playing the Abierto Akron Zapopan tournament.
“I’m looking forward to competing again and seeing Mexico for the first time, I’ll see you soon.”
