‘She’s such a great champion’ – Emma Raducanu delighted with victory
Emma Raducanu continued her streak of Grand Slam match wins as she defeated fellow US Open champion Sloane Stephens in three sets.ย
After a dominant opening set which saw the Brit go 6-0 ahead after just 17 minutes on-court, the tie eventually concluded 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 in favour of the 19-year-old.
Playing on the second show court at the Australian Open, Margaret Court Arena, Raducanu made sure to soak up the moment after winning her first main draw match in Melbourne.
“I just want to thank everyone for coming out and staying so late, I really appreciate it,” she told the crowd in her post-match interview.
“I think both Sloane and I really put everything out there and gave it all we had.
“I thought it was a really high quality match with some very long rallies, so I’m very happy to have come through against such a great champion like her.”
While she slumped in the middle as Stephens found her feet, Raducanu said she was happy with how she played given the occasion.
“I was very pleased [with my performance], coming out of the first set I thought I played some very good tennis with very few unforced errors.
“And then, of course there was going to be some adversity.
“In the third set, I don’t think the score really reflected the level out there because I was really feeling it and just focusing [hard to win].”
While those who were watching the match were glued to the action, fellow British Major winner Andy Murray had no such luck as he was unable to watch the match, complaining about it on Twitter.
