‘We’ve wasted it’ declares Murray on chance to build on tennis legacy

The opportunity has apparently passed to truly harness the legacy of Jamie and Andy Murray to grow the sport in their native Scotland, according to their mother.

The two brothers have had great success over their careers. Andy Murray has three singles Slam titles and two Olympics singles gold medals.

Jamie Murray has two Slam titles in men’s doubles and a further five in mixed doubles. The brothers were both part of the British team that won the 2015 Davis Cup, and Andy and Jamie have been world number one in singles and doubles respectively before.

But their mother and former British Fed Cup captain (now the Billie Jean King Cup) Judy Murray believes that figures in the sport back home in Scotland have failed to capitalise on the two mens’ successes.

“I predicted, quite some time ago, that Jamie and Andy would retire and there would be nothing to show for it, and I really feel that now,” Judy told BBC Scotland.

“We will never get this chance again.”

She added: “We’ve had the most incredible shop window for tennis and largely we have wasted it.”

Judy Murray has campaigned for better tennis facilities in Scotland throughout her sons’ careers. She is disappointed in the results.

In 2016, soon after Jamie and Andy reached world number one in their respective disciplines, Tennis Scotland, Sportscotland and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) announced a joint £15m investment to double the amount of indoor courts in Scotland from 112 to 225. That work is yet to begin nearly six years on.

“Yes, most clubs will have seen a growth in participation,” Judy admitted. “Partly because of what the boys have done and partly, and more recently, because of Covid.

“But there’s far too many pockets of the country where there are just no courts and nowhere to play, and that frustrates me.”
