Sebastian Korda awaits Carlos Alcaraz or Sebastian Baez in ATP Next Gen final
Sebastian Korda clinched victory in an all-American battle to become the first US player to feature in the final of the Next Gen ATP Finals.
The American number number four and number 10 faced off for the first time as they looked to reach the final of the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals.
Korda claimed a 30th win of the season by overcoming Lorenzo Musetti in his final group stage match to secure his place in the semi-finals.
And it was he who got off to the better start, claiming the first set 7-3 in a tiebreak.
But Nakashima responded well to take sets two and three 4-2, 4-1 and be one set from the final.
Korda then swung the momentum back in his favour again by winning 10 points in a row to start the fourth set. He won it 4-2 and the fifth by the same scoreline to book his ticket to the final.
“It was an incredible match,” Korda said in his post-match interview. “Brandon [Nakashima] was playing some unbelievable tennis, halfway through it.
“I just stayed with him and had a couple chances in the fourth and fifth set and just took them and ran with it.”
“I just got a little bit more aggressive, tried coming to the net a little bit more. Tried placing my serves a little bit better.
“I was going for more flat serves and started opening up the court a bit more. That worked really well for me today.”
Korda will face either top seed Carlos Alcaraz or eighth seed Sebastian Baez in the final. Like Korda, Alcaraz won all three of his group stage matches.
