Jannik Sinner sinks home talent to take on fellow ATP Finals hopeful

Jannik Sinner has improved his impressive win streak on indoor hard courts to 10 and sets up a clash with another ATP Finals contender.

The 20-year-old took on Austrian pro Dennis Novak in front of the Vienna Open crowd.

While Sinner was well below his highest level, it was enough to oust the ATP world number 116 6-4, 6-2 in under 80 minutes on-court.

Sinner has now claimed 10 successive victories on indoor hard courts, all in straight sets, winning 20 sets consecutively.

Those 10 wins have come across the Sofia Open, Bulgaria, the European Open in Belgium and the Vienna Open.

Sinner clinched the titles at the Bulgarian and Belgian ATP 250 events. They represent his fourth and fifth ATP titles respectively, and his third and fourth in 2021.

Up next in the quarter-finals, Sinner will take on fourth seed Casper Ruud for a place in the last four.

Between them, Sinner and Ruud have nine titles on the ATP this season. In fact, Ruud leads the tour with his tally of five trophies in 2021.

As a result, the two men are in contention to qualify for the ATP Finals in what would be a debut for both men.

Ruud is currently seventh in the ATP Race to Turin, while Sinner is 10th. With Rafael Nadal out for the rest of the season, this leaves the Italian one spot off qualifying at present.

The two men have met on-court before, at the same tournament in 2020. On that occasion, Sinner upset Ruud in straight sets, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 in the first round.

Should Sinner claim victory over Ruud, he would overtake Hubert Hurkacz and Nadal to be just 90 ranking points behind the Norwegian in the race.

Should Ruud win, he would increase the gap between himself and Sinner from 180 to 270 points, as well as pulling 240 points ahead of Hurkacz.
