Kim Clijsters ‘super excited’ about future despite Chicago loss


Kim Clijsters revealed that she feels physically well following her first tour level match in over a year as she continues her comeback.

The 38-year-old former world number one took to the court in the first round of the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic taking on fellow veteran Hsieh Su-wei.

Clijsters lost out in three sets 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, but commented positively after the encounter.

“Obviously, it was exciting to go back out there after a long period of recovery,” Clijsters said following the defeat. 

“Super excited to be here and to start my match. The match, you know, some good things and bad things, inconsistency.

“Physically being able to get through these matches without big concerns, that was the main goal. I came close today, but I still have a good feeling.” 

Clijsters is making her second comeback from retirement. In 2007 she retired before returning in 2009, then retired again in 2012, coming back to the WTA tour in February 2020.

The Belgian played tour WTA events before the tour was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Before Chicago this week, she had not played since the 2020 US Open, where she lost in the first round to Ekaterina Alexandrova, before requiring knee surgery later that year.

The four-time Slam champion also contracted Covid-19 early in 2021, delaying her return to the court even further.
