Laver Cup 2021: Team Europe player ratings


Team Europe came away from the 2021 Laver Cup as champions for the fourth time in easily their most dominant win to date. 

The three-time defending champions won the event after playing just nine of the 12 scheduled matches, sweeping all but won result on their way to a 14-1 rout.

Daniil Medvedev, 9 out of 10

  • Singles win vs. Denis Shapovalov, 6-4, 6-0.

Medvedev played brilliantly to accomplish what was asked of him. The world number two played just one match in his Laver Cup debut, but won it convincingly.

After breaking Shapovalov to go up 5-4 in the first set, Medvedev won seven straight games to seal the match 6-4, 6-0 and bring Team Europe up to a 9-1 lead on day two.

 

 

Stefanos Tsitsipas, 9 out of 10

  • Singles win vs Nick Kyrgios, 6-3, 6-4.
  • Doubles win with Andrey Rublev vs John Isner/Nick Kyrgios, 6-7 (8-10), 6-3, 10-4.

The Greek star was making his second Laver Cup appearance and showed his experience in Boston.

Tsitsipas dismissed Kyrgios in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, saving six break points along the way, before ousting Isner and Kyrgios 6-7 (8-10), 6-3, 10-4 in the final doubles of day two to put Team Europe on the brink of glory at 11-1.

 

 

Alexander Zverev, 8 out of 10

  • Doubles loss with Matteo Berrettini vs John Isner/Denis Shapovalov, 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 1-10.
  • Singles win vs John Isner, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (6-8), 10-5.
  • Doubles win with Andrey Rublev vs Reilly Opelka/Denis Shapovalov, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 10-3.

Along with Matteo Berrettini, the Olympic gold medallist was the only player to surrender a point to Team World at this year’s event, finishing day one with the score 3-1 in favour of Team Europe.

From there, the world number four won out in a tight tie-break filled match with John Isner, as well as sealing the title clinching doubles match alongside Andrey Rublev on day three.

 

 

Andrey Rublev, 10 out of 10

  • Singles win vs Diego Schwartzman, 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.
  • Doubles win with Stefanos Tsitsipas vs John Isner/Nick Kyrgios, 6-7 (8-10), 6-3, 10-4.
  • Doubles win with Alexander Zverev vs Reilly Opelka/Denis Shapovalov 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 10-3.

Rublev was the only player on Team Europe to play three and win three, on his event debut no less.

The Russian ousted Schwartzman in an intense match that ended 11-9 in a match tiebreak, before pulling off two more match tiebreak wins in doubles at the end of day two and to seal the title on day three.

 

 

Matteo Berrettini, 6 out of 10

  • Singles win vs Felix Auger-Aliassime, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 10-8.
  • Doubles loss with Alexander Zverev vs John Isner/Denis Shapovalov, 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 1-10.

The Wimbledon finalist was yet another debutant at the Laver Cup this year, and got his debut off to a good start with a hard-fought win over Auger-Aliassime, a repeat of the pair’s Wimbledon quarter-final meeting.

The Italian did then suffer the only lost point Team Europe faced alongside Zverev, making for a mixed bad of results for the world number seven.

 

 

Casper Ruud, 9 out of 10

  • Singles win vs Reilly Opelka, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

As with Medvedev, Ruud did exactly what was asked of him. Like the world number two, Ruud played just one match at the Laver Cup on his debut, the opener on day one against American ace Reilly Opelka.

The Norwegian did well to overcome Opelka in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to start the ball rolling for another Laver Cup triumph for Team Europe.
