Novak Djokovic on the ‘Big Three’ – ‘I hope people continue the GOAT debate’
Novak Djokovic has admitted that he believes the discussion surrounding him, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal is good for tennis at large.
The world number one is the only member of the illustrious group playing at the US Open this year, but that does not mean that the conversation about them is quiet.
As such, Djokovic has given comment on the debate about himself and the other two 20-Slam champions, as he fights to become the first to reach 21.
“It’s difficult to say who is better,” Djokovic explained at a tournament press conference. “Three of us, we’re all so different.
“We all have different styles. We have different trajectories or journeys to where we are at this moment.
“We all had tremendous success, some more particularly on one surface, some the other surface.”
Many in the tennis world aim to tackle the ‘GOAT’ debate by separating the three men by surface.
In doing so, Djokovic is the greatest ever hard court player, Nadal i s the greatest clay court player, and Federer is the most prolific grass courter.
“We do complement each other,” the Serb added. “I think the rivalry between the ‘Big Three’, so to say, it’s phenomenal for our sport.
“So the more traction, the more conversation there is around the three of us, the GOAT discussion, et cetera, the better in general for our sport.
“Yeah, I hope people still keep on talking about it.”
While the fact that all men sit on 20 Slam titles makes it difficult to separate them from one another, many feel it would be difficult to argue with Djokovic’s numbers should he claim a 21st title and complete the Calendar Grand Slam in New York.
