Alexander Zverev win means history repeats itself in Cincinnati
With Alexander Zverev completing the last four line-up in Ohio, a unique setup comes about for the first time in over a decade.
After the German dispatched Casper Ruud in straight sets to complete the semi-final draw, echoes of Cincinnati 2009 could be heard.
The win for Zverev means that the semi-final is made up of the top four seeds in Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev.
The last time this happened was 12 years ago, when the ‘Big Four’ of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic all reached the semi-finals.
The make-up of that year’s final ended up being the top seed of Federer versus the third seed in Djokovic.
If the pattern were to continue again, it would spell good news for Zverev. The final would see 2019 champion and number one seed Daniil Medvedev up against the world number five in the final.
On the other hand, Andrey Rublev will be looking to make a second Masters 1000 final of his career, and two in 2021, while Stefanos Tsitsipas would like to go at least one step further than his semi-final appearance of 2020.
