‘He’s recovering as expected’ – Dominic Thiem backed to emulate Rafael Nadal comeback

Dominic Thiem continues to suffer setbacks in his 2021 season, but there is a piece of good news from those around the 27-year-old.

Thiem has played just 18 matches so far in 2021 and suffered an injury to his wrist at the Mallorca Championships, forcing his withdrawal from Wimbledon and the Olympics.

Alex Stober, physiotherapist to the world number number six, gave an update about a possible return for the Austrian.

“We don’t have a date in sight yet because we are following further medical advice,” Stober told Austrian newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten.

“But what is certain is that Dominic will return to the match court this year. Dominic knows he has to be patient (in order to totally heal). The healing process is developing as expected.”

Stober further explained how the injury is similar to one suffered by Nadal back in 2016, suggesting that it is a less than major problem for the 2020 US Open champion.

“Dominic has trusted the doctors from the beginning and will continue to follow their advice,” Stober said. “He (Rafael Nadal) had a similar injury in 2016.”
