The third seed from China was broken five times during the contest as she slumped to a 6-2 6-3 defeat to an opponent ranked 71 places below her.

Sixth seed Sybille Bammer fared better in her match against Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan, easing to a 6-3 6-0 win in just 67 minutes.

Slovakian seventh seed Magdalena Rybarikova also progressed to the quarter-finals, and a meeting against top seed Elena Dementieva, with a 6-4 7-5 victory over Thailand’s Noppawan Lertcheewakarn.

Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa came from a set down to beat Tatjana Malek 4-6 6-2 6-3 and set up a last-eight clash with Japan’s Ayumi Morita.
