WTA Indian Wells draw: Emma Raducanu on course to face idol Simona Halep

US Open champion Emma Raducanu is on course to face her idol Simona Halep in the third round after the Indian Wells draw was announced.

The 18-year-old, whose heroic triumph in New York last month propelled her from 150th to 22nd in the world rankings, received a wildcard entry and a bye to the second round of the WTA 1000 event.

Raducanu will face the winner either Maria Camila Osorio Serrano and Aliaksandra Sasnovich in her first contest since beating Leylah Fernandez in Flushing Meadows, with a win for the Brit setting up a possible encounter against Halep.

The US Open champion will be playing in just her fifth WTA event of her career having made her tour debut in June this year before a fourth round run at Wimbledon and a remarkable victory across the pond.

The Romanian star on the other hand, has two Grand Slam titles to her name and won the event often referred to as the ‘unofficial fifth Grand Slam’ back in 2015.

Should Raducanu prevail against her idol in a possible third-round fixture, the 18-year-old also has Elina Svitolina in her quarter of the draw, with second seed Iga Swiatek or possibly Leylah Fernandez lying in wait in the semi-finals.

In the other half of the draw, top seed and Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova features, whilst Barbora Krejcikova, Garbine Muguruza and Bianca Andreescu are also in action.

Projected draw for Emma Raducanu:

First round: Bye

Second round: Maria Camila Osorio Serrano (World number 71)

Third round: Simona Halep (World number 17)

Fourth round: Petra Kvitova (World number 11)

Quarter-final: Elina Svitolina (World number 7)

Semi-final: Iga Swiatek (World number 4)

Final: Karolina Pliskova (World number 3)
