This was the 17th meeting between the two stalwarts and it’s a match-up that rarely disappoints. This time, though, the Dane – who has reached four finals this year without success – was simply too strong for her Polish rival.
“I've known Aga since we were probably five and six or six and seven,” said Wozniacki. “Nothing really changes, we go out there and we battle it out every time. Every match we just go out there and try our best.”
Karolina Pliskova continues to enjoy life at the top of the rankings as she reached the last eight via a retirement. Her opponent, Naomi Osaka, quit after just one game in the third set with a reoccurring abdominal injury.
Sloane Stephens’ comeback gathered pace as she thrashed former world No.1, Angelique Kerber, 6-2 6-2 to prolong her stay in Canada. No.2 seed, Simona Halep continues to make serene progress as she eased past Barbora Strycova for the concession of just one game in less than an hour.
Elsewhere on the grounds, Caroline Garcia ended Catherine Bellis’ impressive run in straight sets and Lucie Safarova prevailed over the on-form Ekaterina Makarova 6-3 6-7(3) 6-2.
