Wozniacki takes title on home soil
Danish super-teen Caroline Wozniacki brought her 2008 season to a perfect conclusion by winning her hometown tournament on Sunday.
Caroline Wozniacki, who has risen 52 places to No.12 in the WTA world rankings during 2008, thrilled local fans by winning the $100,000 event in Odense.
Wozniacki, who has won WTA Tour titles in Stockholm, New Haven and Japan this year, didnt drop any more than five games in any one match on her way to the semis.
She was made to work hard once she got there, though, fighting her way past French sixth seed Stephanie Foretz 7-6, 7-5. Wozniacki was back to her dominant best in the title decider, however, when she completely outplayed Swedens Sofia Arvidsson 6-2, 6-1.
“The tournament is the largest womens tournament ever on Danish soil,” Wozniacki told her personal website.
“Its an honour to play in front of my home crowd in Odense where I was born its a special feeling to play here.
“The atmosphere has been fantastic and I hope that more people are willing to come watching great tennis here. It is a very good tournament and there were a lot of high quality matches.”
There was some good news for Tennishead at the Odense event too when the doubles trophy went to resident blogger Sarah Borwell and American partner Courtney Nagle.
The British-US team beat top seeds Gabriela Chmelinova from the Czech Republic and Mervana Jugic-Salkic from Bosnia Herzegovina 6-4, 6-4 in the final.
The result moves Borwell up to a new career-high doubles world ranking of No.108 today.
On the ATP Challenger Tour Russias Dmitry Tursunov won the IPP Open in Helsinki, a 106,000 Euro event.
Tursunov beat Slovakias Karol Beck 6-4, 6-3 in the final and moves up five places to No.22 in the ATP world rankings.
