Wins for Monfils and Wawrinka

Fourth seed Monfils defeated qualifier Marsel Ilhan, who at the recent US Open became the first Turkish player to win a main-draw match at a grand slam event, 6-2 6-4.

Seventh seed Wawrinka, meanwhile, defeated John Isner 6-4 6-4.

Marco Chiudinelli became the second Swiss player to reach the second round with a 4-6 6-1 6-4 victory over Israel’s Dudi Sela, while Simon Greul defeated Martin Vassallo Arguello 4-6 6-4 6-2.
