Win a VIP shopping trip at Wigmore Sports
Originally published on 19/06/15
When Wigmore Sports opened its doors in February 1982, founder Chico Davda had a vision for a specialist tennis store that offered unrivalled service and maintenance of rackets including a speedy and professional re-stringing service. Fast forward 33 years and with 12 members of staff, all of whom love sport, Wigmore continues to offer its customers a range of products including all the major brands as well as some exciting smaller brands too.
Arranged over two floors, the store, situated in London’s West End, is impressive in design. Downstairs there is a “hitting room” where customers can try out rackets before they buy, as well as a space large enough to try shoes on in comfort. Upstairs there is a display of rackets that gleam under the spotlights and a range of clothing and accessories unrivalled in most tennis shops. Regular customers are entitled to a Loyalty Card which means for every £10 spent in store shoppers are given one point. Every point is worth £1 when redeemed in the store.
Stringers' corner
The idea that a player should re-string a racket the same number of times per year as they play each week is sound advice, according to the Wigmore experts. In the UK, most club players act on this advice less than fanatics from other countries. Most rackets in the UK are sold already strung, whereas in Spain and France frames are sold unstrung before the buyer chooses the right strings and tension to suit their game. Understanding strings isn't complicated, providing you talk to an expert. The Wigmore staff love walking players through their array of strings; and players will see an improvement in the playability of their frames on different surfaces and in different conditions.
