Serena Williams may have only been able to play one match at Queen’s, but it was clearly enough to capture the attention of the tennis world.
And, more importantly, those responsible for selecting the wildcards for Wimbledon.
After all, the American has made her comeback to be competitive, such is the nature of this ruthless, legendary champion. Serena Williams hasn’t returned to make up the numbers.
She will have aspirations of causing upsets and competing on the biggest stages once again, with there being few larger than Wimbledon.
So, we patiently await the reveal of their wildcards for the upcoming event, with their chief, Sally Bolton, offering a useful insight into their thinking just yesterday.
Wimbledon chief hints at Serena Williams wildcard
Speaking at a press conference, as relayed by The Independent, the All England Lawn Tennis Club chief was asked about the potential of Serena snagging a wildcard spot if she wanted one.
Bolton was fair and frank in her reply, admitting: “I can’t answer that question, but I guess what I can say is we can all see how much excitement Serena being back on a tennis court and particularly on a grass court has created, and so one can only imagine what that would be like at the championships.
How impressed were you with Serena Williams’ level?
A legendary return!
“The wildcard committee will formally make their decisions next week and we’ll be communicating those, but she has certainly created a fantastic buzz and that’s exciting for the sport.”
They will have a tough task on their hands balancing between the many Brits they will want to reward with a coveted spot and other stars, with many calling for Maja Chwalinska to get a Wimbledon wildcard, among others.
Victoria Mboko ruled out of Wimbledon after injury at Queen’s
In that same report by The Independent, they also reveal the extent of Victoria Mboko’s injury.
After all, the only reason Serena’s time at Queen’s was cut short was due to the Canadian being forced to retire from her singles match following an awkward fall which badly contorted her knee.
Who has impressed you the most?
Well, although the official diagnosis remains unclear, what has been revealed is that this supremely talented 19-year-old will sadly now miss Wimbledon.
Serena Williams sent a message to Mboko wishing her the best after it had happened, but likely could not have imagined the damage would be so severe.
After what has been a really impressive campaign, building on last year’s breakthrough, this marks a hammer blow for the teenage sensation.
