Katie Boulter has been Britain’s most in-form player at the start of this season.
While Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper have struggled with physical ailments and mixed form, Boulter has excelled.
After falling out of the top 100 at the start of this year, Boulter put together a remarkable set of performances to win her fourth WTA title at the Ostrava Open.
What is stopping Katie Boulter from staying in the WTA top 20?
Boulter has continued to perform at an excellent level, securing victories against the likes of Beatriz Haddad Maia and Clara Tauson.
The British star is now preparing to participate in the Madrid Open, where she will face Taylor Townsend in the first round.
Katie Boulter’s big opportunity in Madrid
In the Madrid Open first round, Katie Boulter faces Taylor Townsend – a player whom the Briton has enjoyed great success against in the past.
In fact, Boulter has defeated the American in all of their three previous WTA Tour meetings.
Boulter last defeated Townsend 6-4, 6-4 at the 2024 China Open.
| Tournament | Round | Winner | Score |
| 2018 Rancho Santa Fe | Round of 32 | Boulter | 6-3, 7-5 |
| 2018 Miami Open | Qualifying first round | Boulter | 7-6, 6-2 |
| 2024 China Open | Round of 64 | Boulter | 6-4, 6-4 |
If Boulter were to defeat Townsend for the fourth time in her career, she would play world number five Jessica Pegula in the Madrid Open second round.
Boulter has a 1-1 record against Pegula, beating the American at the 2024 United Cup.
Pegula has since levelled their head-to-head record, defeating Boulter 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the Billie Jean King Cup semi-finals.
Pegula’s record in Madrid is mixed: she has reached the quarter-finals and final, but has also exited at the third round stage twice.
How do you rate Jessica Pegula’s chances of ever winning a Grand Slam?
Moreover, Pegula struggled throughout the 2025 European clay-court swing.
She lost her second match [quarter-finals] in Stuttgart, suffered third-round defeats in Madrid and Rome, lost her opening match of the Strasbourg Open, and exited Roland Garros in the fourth round.
Jessica Pegula’s 2025 European clay-court swing
- Stuttgart Open – quarter-finals [second match]
- Madrid Open – Third Round
- Italian Open – Third Round
- Strasbourg Open – lost opening match
- Roland Garros – Fourth Round
If Pegula underperforms once again on the European clay, Katie Boulter could most certainly defeat the American and advance far at the Madrid Open.
Katie Boulter’s reaction to beating Jessica Pegula
At the 2024 United Cup, Katie Boulter gave Great Britain the lead in their match against the United States after beating Jessica Pegula 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 44 minutes.
“I felt like I really wanted to take it to her today and give it my best shot and see where my level was at,” Boulter said afterwards, as per the WTA Tour.

“I think I surprised myself a little bit at times with how well we were both competing, and we had some really good points.
“I felt like I just backed myself at the right times and went after it.”
The British team were unable to hold on to their advantage, eventually losing the tie 1-2.
Taylor Fritz beat Cameron Norrie 7-6, 6-4, before Fritz and Pegula paired up to defeat Boulter and Neal Skupski in the decisive doubles rubber, 1-6, 7-6, 10-7.
