Why I believe Serena Williams should play doubles with Coco Gauff and not Venus Williams at the US Open this year

Serena Williams and Venus Williams are set to make an emphatic return at the Wimbledon Championships later this month.

Serena and Venus, winners of six Wimbledon Women’s Doubles titles, have been granted wildcards for this year’s doubles event.

Serena returned to competitive play – following a near four-year absence – earlier this month when she played alongside Victoria Mboko at the Queen’s Club Championships.

How impressed were you with Serena Williams’ level?

A legendary return!

The American superstar has also competed alongside Karolina Muchova at the Berlin Open since making her return to the court.

Now that Serena and Venus have confirmed their participation at Wimbledon, Serena should turn her attention towards Coco Gauff.

Serena Williams should play doubles with Coco Gauff at the US Open

Many tennis fans – particularly American tennis fans – will hope to see Serena and Venus compete alongside each other at the US Open later this year.

If the sisters do compete alongside each other, it would be a fantastic moment for both players and the US Open crowd.

However, one implores Serena to play alongside Coco Gauff in New York, instead of Venus.

Serena was the greatest American player of her generation.

In fact, she was the greatest single player of her generation, period.

Coco Gauff is one of the best players of this current crop of players, and comfortably the most accomplished and talented American player of her generation.

Venus Williams has already played doubles alongside Gauff, doing so at the 2021 French Open.

Serena never has; and the US Open represents the perfect opportunity to do so.

A Serena-Coco partnership at the US Open would bridge the gap between the best American players of the past and present, offering US tennis fans a moment to study the duo’s cross-generation teamwork and camaraderie on a tennis court.

Serena recently stated that she would ‘love’ to play doubles with Gauff – why not make this potential partnership a reality?

If not, who is?

What happened when Coco Gauff played alongside Venus Williams?

In 2021, Venus Williams and a youthful Coco Gauff paired up for the first time at Roland Garros.

Unfortunately for the star-studded duo, they were beaten in the first round by 13th seeds Ellen Perez and Saisai Zheng.

Williams and Gauff were well on their way to causing an upset in the French capital after taking the first set 7-6.

Perez and Zheng then roared back to claim victory, winning the final two sets 6-4, 6-3.
