Why Andy Murray could now be tempted to coach Emma Raducanu after Francisco Roig split

Emma Raducanu has confirmed her split with Francisco Roig after a poor start to the 2026 season.

Raducanu and Roig began working together after Wimbledon in 2025, but Rafael Nadal’s former coach struggled to turn the British star’s fortunes around.

She started the season in middling fashion, with three wins and three losses from the United Cup, Hobart International, and the Australian Open.

Raducanu has not confirmed who will be her next coach, but Andy Murray’s name, as ever, has been tipped.

Andy Murray said it would be ‘easier’ to coach a British star than any other

The Scot is often touted as a potential coach for top stars following his retirement and short stint with Novak Djokovic.

Murray was touted to become Carlos Alcaraz’s coach after the world number one split with Juan Carlos Ferrero at the end of 2025.

It could actually be more likely that Murray opts to work with a British star like Raducanu due to his commitments.

Who should be Emma Raducanu’s next coach?

Speaking to The Daily Express in 2025, Murray confirmed that it’s the travelling that is putting him off returning to coaching.

However, Murray said a London-based player would be ‘easier’ than coaching an international tennis player.

“It becomes easier because the off weeks, at least you are close to home. But if it is a player who lives elsewhere, it means a lot of time away from the family, and I have no interest in doing that just now because I don’t want to be away from them,” he said last year.

That might not be the only appeal for Murray to come back out of retirement to join Raducanu as an advisor.

Emma Raducanu’s smaller schedule could also be an appeal to Andy Murray

Raducanu only played 22 tournaments in 2025 and she revealed plans to play fewer events in the 2026 season.

“I would say next year I hope to play less than I did this year, but I think also just incorporating into my warm-ups fitness, so it’s not just my fitness sessions which are set for it,” she told the BBC in December 2025.

If Raducanu played 15-20 tournaments throughout 2026 then Murray could be very tempted to join the Brit on tour.

Murray knows all about the pressure put under British players and could be a real help to the star’s mental side of the game.

The Scot also successfully managed to reach his physical peak in order to challenge the very top of the sport when he was around Raducanu’s age.

Those ingredients could be pivotal for Murray becoming Raducanu’s new coach and helping to turn the British star’s career around.
