What tennis fans will learn about Alexandra Eala at the Linz Open

Add as preferred source on Google

Alex Eala has received a difficult Linz Open draw.

If she defeats world number 87 Julia Grabher in round one, Eala will face 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the second round.

Ostapenko, the 2024 Linz Open champion, is somewhat of a clay-court specialist and is undoubtedly one of the favourites for the Linz Open title.

Will Alex Eala ever win a Grand Slam title?

When analysing Eala’s draw from another perspective, the difficulty of her path has presented the youngster with an opportunity to prove a point to her fans.

Tennis fans will learn whether Alex Eala can defeat the best WTA stars on clay

Alex Eala has already demonstrated that she can beat the best players in the world on hard courts.

Last year, the Filipina burst onto the WTA scene at the Miami Open, defeating Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek on her way to the semi-finals.

Later that year, Eala stunned top 15 seed Clara Tauson at the US Open, becoming the first Filipina in history to win a main draw match at a Grand Slam event.

This year, Eala has continued the trend, securing victories against Jasmine Paolini and Coco Gauff.

However, for all her success against top players, Eala is yet to prove that she can defeat the best on clay.

Last year, Eala played at three significant WTA clay-court events in Madrid, Rome and Paris.

Across those tournaments, Eala won one of her four matches – that being victory over Viktoriya Tomova, who is now ranked 169th on the WTA Tour.

Alexandra Eala’s 2025 WTA Tour clay-court results

The closest Eala came to causing an upset was against Iga Swiatek at the 2025 Madrid Open. The Filipina began their contest in impressive fashion, but eventually fell to a 6-4, 4-6, 2-6 loss in the Spanish capital.

If the 20-year-old wishes to become an all-court force on the WTA Tour, she will need to prove that she can compete with the very best on clay.

Eala could do exactly that during this year’s clay-court swing – especially if she defeats Jelena Ostapenko in Linz.

Is Alex Eala’s game suited for clay?

When analysing Eala’s game, one must come to the conclusion that her play style is not best suited for clay courts.

Eala thrives as a counter-puncher: a game style that can flourish on hard courts.

However, there is no reason why Eala cannot adapt her game slightly to achieve success on clay courts.

What is the best win of Alexandra Eala’s career so far? 🤔

The Filipina has demonstrated in the past that she is capable of using greater topspin on her shots, and that she is willing to be extremely patient while engaged in long rallies.

These traits will serve her well during the upcoming clay-court swing, as will her mental toughness.

Clay-courts present the toughest challenge for tennis players, as they are required to engage in long energy-sapping rallies, due to the slow nature of the surface.

Eala is more than capable of maintaining her mental fortitude in these situations, as demonstrated by her remarkable comeback victory over Aliaksandra Sasnovich earlier this year.

Eala also has a history of success on the surface, winning the 2021 French Open Girls Doubles title alongside Oksana Selekhmeteva.

If the Filipina can appropriately adjust her game to suit the clay surface this year, there is no telling what she could achieve.
