After an impressive North American campaign, Alex Eala has travelled to Austria for her first event of the clay-court swing.

Eala, the world number 45, most recently reached the Miami Open fourth round before being comprehensively beaten by Karolina Muchova.

However, the Filipina has much to be positive about heading into the Linz Open, which will begin on Monday.

Will Alex Eala ever win a Grand Slam title?

Eala will compete with the likes of Ekaterina Alexandrova and Mirra Andreeva for the title. Andreeva, the world number 10, received a late wildcard spot for the event and will be the top seed.

Unfortunately for fans of the Filipina, she may struggle to advance far at the event after receiving a difficult draw.

Alex Eala could face Jelena Ostapenko in the Linz Open second round

Eala’s Linz Open campaign will begin against world number 87 Julia Grabher.

If Eala defeats the Austrian player, she will face 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the Linz Open second round.

Ostapenko is a force to be reckoned with on clay, as demonstrated by her title-winning campaign at the 2025 Stuttgart Open – a campaign during which she defeated Iga Swiatek, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Aryna Sabalenka.

Ostapenko is also a former Linz Open champion.

The Latvian Grand Slam champion defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-2, 6-3 in the final two years ago.

If Eala produces a shock and defeats Ostapenko, she will likely face seventh seed Ann Li or British star Katie Boulter in the quarter-finals.

Should Eala advance to the last four, she will most probably face top seed and tournament favourite Mirra Andreeva.

Should Eala reach the final in Linz, she may face second seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Alexandrova, the world number 13, defeated Dayana Yastremska in the 2025 final.

Alex Eala’s excellent record against Jelena Ostapenko

Defeating Ostapenko on clay would be a remarkable feat and Eala will certainly need to perform at her best, should she face the Latvian in the Linz Open second round.

However, the 20-year-old should feel confident heading into the event after beating Ostapenko in both of their previous meetings on the WTA Tour.

The pair met for the first time at the 2025 Miami Open. Eala defeated the Latvian 7-6, 7-5 on her way to the semi-finals in Florida.

What is the best win of Alexandra Eala’s career so far? 🤔

Iga Swiatek in Miami, Clara Tauson at the US Open, Jasmine Paolini in Dubai, or a different match?

A few months later, Eala again defeated Ostapenko, this time at the Eastbourne Open.

The Filipina went on to reach the final in Sussex, before losing a nail-biting contest to Australian youngster Maya Joint.

These victories over Ostapenko were certainly impressive; however, facing Ostapenko on clay presents an entirely different challenge.

The Latvian has proven time and time again that she excels on the clay surface, and the Grand Slam champion is arguably the favourite for the Linz title, despite being the fourth seed.
