Venus Williams Wimbledon 2022

‘What kind of question is that?’ – Venus Williams makes Wimbledon mixed doubles goals clear

Venus Williams is at Wimbledon to win the mixed doubles alongside Jamie Murray, end of, according to the five-time singles champion.

The pair overcame Michael Venus and Alicja Rosolska in a thoroughly entertaining three-set encounter to close the day’s play on Court No. 1 on Friday.

Past 9pm, the pair were then swiftly into their press conference.

The question of the seriousness of their entry came up quickly, especially given how last minute the pairing was.

Are they in it for the experience and to match Andy and Serena’s run from 2019?

Or, are they looking to go all the way to the title?

Williams replied, smiling: “What kind of question is that?

“We’re in it for a stroll.

“Come on.”

She clarified that she and Murray are in it to do what they normally do, what champions do.

“I always expect to win,” she said.

On the question of who instigated the team-up, Murray revealed that it was actually Williams’ end that was looking to make the duo happen.

She added: “I’ve been trying to play with him forever!

“He plays hard to get,” she continued, laughing.

Murray defended himself, saying: “She only asked me at Wimbledon where it’s five sets for the [men’s] doubles.”

The Wimbledon mixed doubles is one of just two Slam doubles disciplines that Venus has not won, the other being the US Open mixed doubles.

She did reach the final in 2006 alongside Bob Bryan, but lost that day to Andy Ram and Vera Zvonareva.

Murray on the other hand is a two-time mixed doubles champion at Wimbledon.

He partnered Jelena Jankovic in 2007 and Martina Hingis a decade later in 2017 for those two trophies.
