What Emma Raducanu did mid-match in her loss against Danielle Collins that left Mark Petchey ‘perplexed’

Emma Raducanu’s coaching strategy is one which has always drawn scrutiny from the bulk of the tennis world, and with good reason.

After all, the 22-year-old has been known to chop and change with alarming regularity, leaving little room to build up consistency with one long-term plan.

The talent is quite clearly there, as she exhibited during that miraculous 2021 US Open run, but since then, fitness and form have eluded her.

Only now does she seem to be finding the two, despite Raducanu offering a worrying fitness update after losing to Danielle Collins in the Strasbourg Open.

However, the medical timeout she took in that match is not all that caught the eye of the commentator.

Emma Raducanu leaves her coach stunned

Speaking live on Sky Sports Tennis, Pete Odgers sat alone in the commentary booth to provide coverage of this showdown.

And whilst he was measured and informative throughout, it was one flashpoint late in the second set which he sought to elaborate on for the benefit of the viewer.

After all, both Emma Raducanu and her coach, Mark Petchey, had cut confused figures earlier on in the match as there seemed to be some exchange over a bottle.

Odgers revealed: ‘That was why, by the way, that the bottle we saw initially from Raducanu… right at the start of the match she gave a bottle of liquid to Mark Petchey. There was a perplexed look on his face.

‘The reason being is that it didn’t have the right logo on. Of course, sponsorship is so key at tournaments all around the world. You can understand the ruling being there. Don’t know whether or not Raducanu felt that because there wasn’t any sponsor on her own bottle; perhaps it should have been confiscated.’

One pundit has suggested that Andy Murray could coach Raducanu one day in the future, but for now, Petchey remains.

Raducanu suffers injury scare ahead of the French Open

Whilst her short run in Strasbourg was intended to provide some additional key minutes on the clay ahead of the French Open, the alternative and unforeseen effects of this event might be catastrophic.

After all, she revealed an injury to her lower back which has persisted for months now, which likely did not aid her chances of winning that close final set yesterday.

The worry is that such an issue remains somewhat untreatable, especially in time for the French Open next week.

Hopefully she can manage the pain and reassess afterwards, but it is worrying to wonder when she might be able to fit a longstanding period of recovery into her schedule with the grass season just around the corner.
